If we can encourage others, we should encourage them. Romans 12:8

These are my notes from Joyce Meyer's message on Saturday evening 2/1/14 7 pm Service at Lakewood Church.  This is the first message in the three part series on attitude. This message focuses on the power of attitude. Joyce shares five keys to having a good attitude. I am not affiliated with Joyce Meyer Ministries (other than being a partner and volunteer). These are my personal notes of her message; not an exact transcript.

Strongly on Joyce’s heart this year has been that there are 2 kinds of people.

Those who do things on purpose and passive people.

Passive people want good things but sit around and wait for them to happen.

They’re wishing.

They’re jealous of those who did the work.

Passive people have to wait for a feeling.

Waiting for it to be easy.

They don’t end up with anything.

They blame others, life…

Other people are purposeful people.

Joyce wants to see more purposeful people.

You study this and then you do it on purpose.

You do it because it’s right.

And you trust that you’ll ultimately get a right result.

This weekend: THE POWER OF AN ATTITUDE.

Tomorrow she's teaching on A Patient Attitude.

Then on Maintaining an Unselfish Attitude.

An attitude changes everything.

A good attitude can give you an above average life.

Ephesians 4:22-24

22 Strip yourselves of your former nature [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion;

23 And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude],

24 And put on the new nature (the regenerate self) created in God’s image, [Godlike] in true righteousness and holiness.

Stop acting like you did before you were saved.

We can choose to put on that old nature.

Keep him dead.

Stop acting like you used to and start acting like you ought to.

Vs 23 is the bridge (how).

Constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Joyce knows she had at least 7 or 8 times when she had to quickly purposely straighten out her attitude.

You can’t just go with your feelings.

She had to try 7 times to get her contact in her eye.

The person who purposes to keep a good attitude doesn’t mean you feel like it or that it’s fair.

You do it because you know the Word is true.

But there are no shortcuts.

There are no drive-through breakthroughs.

You only get it by going through.

Airplanes have attitude indicators.

It shows the position of the plane to the horizon.

The horizon represents average.

Nose high when climbing; nose down when diving.

If we have a nose high attitude we’ll always be climbing and above average.

Joyce doesn’t think we comprehend the power of one attitude.

Joyce thinks about Joseph a lot because he went through tough unfair things.

After 13 years of wrong imprisonment his attitude was good and he ended up in the palace.

Joyce wishes Genesis said more about how hard it was for Joseph.

Psalm 105:17-18 hints to the difficulty.

17 He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold as a servant.

18 His feet they hurt with fetters; he was laid in chains of iron and his soul entered into the iron,

His soul entered into the iron

What he went through hurt him so badly there was hardly a way to talk about it.

It did something in his soul.

Instead of iron controlling him his soul became like iron.

Maintaining a great attitude has to be purposeful.

Grow up is always Joyce’s main theme.

Live a life that represents Him.

The church service ends and you have to go home and there’s where your real witness begins.

If you have a nose up attitude keep it.

But if you have a nose down attitude then decide you will make an attitude adjustment tonight.

Simply decide it is what it is and I am going to learn to be victorious in the midst of it.

Joyce loves that God has given us free choice.

The devil can’t make me have a bad attitude.

I can always choose a good attitude.

Joyce experienced hurts that caused her soul to enter into the iron.

The things Joyce thought were her enemies worked for her good.

That allowed her to help more people.

Joseph probably went through very hard times.

Daniel was probably nervous in the lion’s den.

We have to be purposeful to be what God wants s to be.

Sometimes we don’t feel like being purposeful.

Has your get up and go got up and gone?

Your only choice is to get up and get it back.

"The last of human freedoms - the ability to chose one's attitude in a given set of circumstances." - Viktor E. Frankl

The last of the human freedoms …is to choose to maintain a good attitude.

The man said that from a concentration camp.

At attitude is our thought life turned inside out.

You can’t hide your attitude.

It shows up on your face and in your body language.

Your attitude reflects when you think someone did something stupid.

Even if we say the right words the voice tone is wrong.

When Joyce was learning to be submissive she’d say “yes honey” but didn’t mean it.

Genesis 4:5-7

5 But for Cain and his offering He had no respect or regard. So Cain was exceedingly angry and indignant, and he looked sad and depressed.

6 And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why do you look sad and depressed and dejected?

7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.

Cain and Abel

Something was going on in Cain’s heart that showed up on his face.

How many depressed people are angry, bitter and resentful?

A lot of it needs to be dealt with, not medicated.

God said in verse 7 you must master it.

It’s our job to master temptation.

God has equipped us to do the right thing.

As humans we don’t really want to face that.

We want to think that we can’t help it.

Joyce’s granddaughter is like Joyce unplugged (my paraphrase).

She refused to make her bed.

All day she was in a bad mood.

She finally apologized and her whole mood changed.

That unresolved thing in her kept her down.

If you’re unhappy today maybe you should look at what wasn’t dealt with yesterday.

God loves us too much to leave us alone in our messes.

Joyce wants us all to come up higher this year.

We can lend and never borrow.

But not with a nose down attitude.

Every day we can choose to feel sorry for ourselves or get a good attitude.

Attitude inventory:

Which song are you?

1. Make the world go away get it off of my shoulders

2. Raindrops keep falling on my head

3. I’ll do it my way

4. Oh what a beautiful morning oh what a beautiful day

Sing unto the Lord a new song.

Let’s stop singing the same old sad song all the time.

A lady in Starbucks met Joyce and shared her sob story.

Life has thrown me under the bus.

Joyce said it did the same thing to me but I decided to drive the bus.

Are you going to spend your life telling people how life threw you under the bus?

You want pity or power?

I’m tired of letting the devil keep me down.

Many have a reason to have a bad attitude but no right.

5 keys to a good attitude

1. Maintain the right attitude when the going gets rough.

As soon as you notice your attitude diving make an adjustment.

Resist the devil at his onset.

Stop justifying bad attitudes.

I had a bad day at work.

Not feeling good doesn’t give you a right to be mean to people.

As long as I make an excuse for something I can’t get over it.

Don’t do that in your mind.

Maintaining a right attitude is easier than regaining a right attitude.

It’s easier to keep my peace that to lose it and try to get it back.

When you notice your attitude sinking stop immediately.

Don’t let all your emotions get involved.

If you let yourself have a 3 day fit then it’s harder.

Pride kicks in and you’re not apologizing to anybody.

Pray prayers God can answer.

Don’t pray make the problems go away.

We have faith because we’re going to have problems.

You can respond to problems differently.

Sunday always comes after Friday, if you don’t give up on Saturday.

Saturday is where the decision is made.

Joyce imagines Jesus’ Saturday was even harder than Friday.

Let’s go in for the long haul and stop giving up in the middle.

Misery is an option.

Pray: be patient and endure trouble with a good attitude.

John Maxwell said circumstances don’t make you what you are they reveal what you are.

2. Realize the storms won’t last forever

Spring always comes after winter.

If you’re in the winter season know spring will come.

The good news is that the bad news can be turned into good news when you just change your attitude.

Joyce thinks about things she’s gone through and made it through.

How many are saying “I’m not going to make it”?

You will make it.

You will last.

You will come through.

It will be over.

This too shall pass.

Hurting broken people marry other broken hurting people.

In Joyce’s first marriage to a broken troubled man she got pregnant.

Her husband left her and lived with another woman 2 blocks away and told everyone the baby wasn’t his.

She named her baby David, God knew she was going to marry Dave Meyer.

We need to give God more credit.

The baby looked like his father so it was hard to deny him.

Joyce was homeless.

Her hairdresser said she could stay with her until the baby was born.

That was her then but look at her now.

Now she is preaching to 2/3 of the world and at one time she was homeless.

Somewhere along the line their soul had to enter into iron.

Joyce had breast cancer, aggressive fast growing cancer.

Radical mastectomy recommended immediately.

She had the surgery and no cancer got to her lymph nodes.

The ministry was dependent upon her preaching.

She couldn’t preach during recovery.

A minister arrived with a $10,000 check.

She was in a pit, had surgery, she’s a faith preacher.

25 years later she had a clean mammogram.

No cancer!

5 years ago she had serious back problems, lesions on her spine.

Doctors said she had cancer that metastasized to her spine but healed itself.

10 years ago Joyce Meyer Ministries had a severe media attack.

The media can say whatever they want and people choose whether or not to believe it.

Picture of Joyce making an ugly face on cover of magazine.

All was designed to destroy her reputation.

But she’s still here.

Whatever’s going on in your life won’t last forever.

3. Don’t make major decisions in the storm

4. Stay in touch with the control tower

Joyce was on plane and it was diving.

Nobody said anything but get back to your seat.

The crew had oxygen masks on.

Later pilot apologized and said "I had to stay in touch with the control tower."

Sometimes we have to shut everything out and stay in touch with the One in control.

5. Try to keep things in perspective

When someone does something wrong try to remember all they’ve done right.
